In today’s competitive job market, it’s not always easy to stand out from other candidates. However, with a little effort and attention to detail, you can set yourself apart and increase your chances of landing your dream procurement and supply chain role. Here are seven ways to stand out from the crowd, including specific tips for different stages in the selection process.
1.Tailor your application materials to the job description
One of the biggest mistakes that candidates make is to use a one-size-fits-all approach when applying for roles. Rather than sending the same CV and cover letter to every potential employer, take the time to tailor your application materials to the specific job you’re applying for. This shows the employer that you have taken the time to understand the job requirements and that you are truly interested in the position.
Look at the job description and highlight the key skills and qualifications that the employer is looking for and make sure that your application materials demonstrate how you meet these criteria. You should also use language and terminology that reflects the words they use in the adverts and spec and prioritise information that demonstrates your knowledge in their sector.
2. Show your passion for the job
Employers want to hire candidates who are not only qualified for the job but are also passionate about the industry and the work that they do. During the application process make sure you talk about your relevant experience, highlighting any projects or work that you have done in the industry, or explaining why you are interested in the job. Tell your story in a professional way, but include detail that comes from the heart, in a polished but authentic tone of voice.

3. Demonstrate your problem-solving skills
Employers want to hire candidates who can think critically and solve problems. During the recruitment process, make sure you highlight any projects or work that you have done that required problem-solving, or by explaining how you would approach a specific issue or obstacle that the employer is facing. Procurement and supply chain professionals are often needed to tackle challenges in high-pressure situations, so try to include examples that demonstrate this kind of experience.
4. Build a strong online presence
In today’s digital age, employers are increasingly using online resources to research job candidates. Building a strong online presence can help you stand out from other candidates and shows employers that you are professional, knowledgeable and have your finger on the digital pulse. No doubt you already have a professional LinkedIn profile but now is the time to make sure it is up to date and that you have some recent endorsements from relevant people. It’s also a good idea to participate in industry-related forums or groups or even get your own content published on them.
If you have a personal website or blog, make sure it has plenty of fresh and unique content that demonstrates your industry knowledge and expertise. During the interview, be prepared to talk about your online presence and how it demonstrates your knowledge of the industry. If you have a healthy or even impressive amount of followers or positive engagement make sure you mention this too, citing actual metrics.
5. Use numbers and statistics
Speaking of figures, employers are often impressed by numbers and statistics, so make sure to include them on your CV. For example, you could incorporate information on how much revenue you generated in your previous role, how many clients or accounts you managed, or how many successful projects you completed and what was achieved. This demonstrates your ability to quantify your achievements and adds credibility to your CV.

6. Include relevant keywords
Many employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen CVs before they are seen by a human. These systems are designed to identify keywords that are relevant to the job, so make sure to include these at appropriate points in your CV. These could be skills, qualifications, software or technology packages or industry-specific terminology.
7. Show your personality
While your CV should be professional, it’s also important to show your personality and let your individuality shine through. This could be by including a personal statement at the beginning of your CV, or by using a more conversational (but appropriate) tone in your writing. Add in a mention of hobbies or interests that demonstrate your skills or personality, such as volunteering or playing a team sport.
If this all sounds like a lot, don’t worry. Take your time and when you have created a first draft of your CV or cover letter ask for a friend or peer’s advice on the content and quality. You can also take a look at our complete guide to finding your dream job in procurement and supply chain.
