If you have read our blog on career development you’ll know that we prioritize progressing our team members. We want them to be proud to work at Bramwith and to get the most out of their career with us. Not every person wants to become a leader, but many do. Here are some of the skills we look for in our team when they want to develop their career towards management.
Honesty
Trust is incredibly important, especially within a close-knit team like Bramwith. You can’t gain people’s trust and expect them to follow your lead if you aren’t honest with them. In addition to telling the truth and promoting a culture of transparency, this also means being able to be vulnerable in front of them. Having the courage to admit when you are wrong or have made a mistake and taking ownership of your actions.
The ability to build strong relationships
This includes building strong, long-lasting relationships with other team members as well as suppliers, clients, customers and peers. The honesty we mentioned above plays a vital role here as does empathy, being able to listen, communicating effectively and - quite simply - being a pleasure to be around. People need to feel valued, seen and heard. This means being present in meetings, keeping promises and showing respect at all times.
Being a good mentor
In our opinion, you can’t be a good leader unless you care about developing your team. Mentorship is a powerful tool for helping others progress in their career and learn new skills. It also helps us understand ourselves better and makes us better managers.
The ability to solve problems
Every type of business requires good problem-solving abilities and recruitment is no exception. You need to have a flexible approach to working and you need to be able to think on your feet. These requirements are even more important at the management or leadership level. When people are looking to you to mitigate a crisis or resolve a conflict you need to handle the situation calmly, and offer reassurance - and you need to be able to find a solution.
Being inspirational
We all need a bit of inspiration and motivation sometimes and we should be able to look to our leaders for this. Leadership means being brave and offering up new ideas and innovations, even if we aren’t sure they will work. It’s about thinking creatively and openly about the path forward and including people in the vision.
Being available
No one lives in an ivory tower at Bramwith. All our management team are available to their team at all times and the door is always open. Concerns can be raised in confidence or (within reason) as part of a public conversation. We want to understand any issues so we can do our best to resolve them. And we want to hear about your ambitions, hopes and dreams so we can help you achieve them.
